Full Description

[TR 12775261] A late-Belgic cremation cemetery at Swarling was excavated, in 1921, by L. Woolley and J.P. Bushe-Fox, (sited from plan(1)). (1) Some nineteen graves were found and these, together with reports of burials destroyed by gravel diggers, would indicate a cemetery frontage of some 500 ft. Each grave contained from 4-6 urns and one, a wooden bucket with iron hoops and handles (Cf. Aylesford which had bronze fittings). Grave goods, which included La Tene III brooches, showed early Roman influence, and dated the cemetery from 1st c. B.C. to the early years of the Roman occupation. All finds are in the Brit. Mus. (2-4) Mr. Collard, owner of Swarling Manor Farm, confirmed the siting. The land was being dug for gravel at the time, but is now waste and overgrown. No further finds have been made.
