Full Description

Watching brief undertaken by CAT in 2005 in Aldington during the laying of an electricity cable. Underneath the present road (Roman Road) was a metalled road, perhaps Roman in date. It consisted of a raised causeway, which seems to have been consolidated on the northern side. Into the causeway was cut a flat-bottomed hollow lined with medium-sized Ragstone rubbled, over which were small Ragstone chippings, and topped with a layer of compacted silty sand. No ditches are obvious, as would be expected with a Roman road, but as the causeway is raised above surrounding ground level drainage would not be an issue. (1)
