Monument record TQ 56 NW 25 - Possible Iron Age features, south of Hulberry
Summary
Excavations by S. Priest in 1915 and 1917, in the chalk pit on Hulberry, or Hulbury Farm at TQ 5242 6533, revealed pits, hearths, large quantities of bones of domestic animals, including horse, a saddle quern, triangular loom weights, and fragments of early Iron Age finger-tip impressed pottery and a footring bowl dated by Kenyon to the C1st AD. Priest suggests the site was an enclosed settlement (although there is no evidence that enclosure banks and ditches were found, or indeed sought). Priest never properly published his excavations but there are a number of references to the pottery, which is in Dartford Museum, and Radford includes it in his list of pits of Little Woodbury type. There is no record of subsequent work on the site and nothing was found when the orchard was grubbed up. It is now under plough and the pit shows as a shallow depression
