Full Description
Swalecliffe/Tankerton foreshore, presumed Lower/Middle Palaeolithic artefacts (handaxes, debitage). None found in context; found together with much more numerous Later Prehistoric material (lithic artefacts, pottery), but distinguished from them by typology and condition (1-6). One handaxe reported by Prestwich (1) as found by J Evans. Two handaxes reported by Worsfold (3) and illustrated by him (4 - p. 225). At least two bout coupe handaxes are reported (6) as found in late 1990s by Oyster Coast Fossil Club, but these haven't been verified by any lithics specialist, and their whereabouts are unknown. (1)
