Full Description

[TR 18216092] Beaker and Brassard found A.D.1920. [NAT] (1) Two sherds of a B2 beaker found "lately" in Ashendens' gravel pit (centred at TQ 18256095 - see 6" Record Sheet) east of Sturry Vicarageand north of Island Road, were presented to Maidstone Museum in Sept. 1932 by the late Dr. A. G. Ince. They are on exhibition in the Museum but no details of the discovery are known. In 1922 H. Dewey of the Geological Survey obtained from the same pit a bowman's stone wristguard which had been found by one of the workmenin association with pottery. The pottery was destroyed before it could be examined but from a description (not reproduced) it has been classified as a B2 beaker. An entry on Maidstone Museum 6" (possibly in O.G.S. Crawford's handwriting) gives the date of discovery as 1920 but this discrepancy has not been resolved. No subsequent finds were reported from the pit which has long been disused; the present whereabouts of the wristguard is not known. (2)
