Full Description
[Name TR 182 603] Roman remains found cAD 1948 [NAT] (1) An excavation by F. Jenkins, August-October 1948, 0.5 mile E of Sturryrailway station at Lat. 51 degrees 18 minutes N; Long. 1 degree 8 minutes E approx., before the site was destroyed by gravel digging, uncovered a Roman ocupation site of the C2nd and C3rd and probably C4th. (2) Extensive oak piles indicated a quay on the bank of an old course of the Stour and were dated by tree ring analysis by A.W.G.Lowther to theC3rd. (3) The site of this excavation, now within a water-filled gravel pit, waspointed out by F. Jenkins at TR 1845 6038. During the excavation evidence of a small kiln (burnt clay, a small trench lined with tiles,and some C3rd pottery) was found. (4) Additional bibliography. (5-7)
