Monument record TR 16 SW 7 - Tilery (site of)
Summary
Medieval tile kiln, possibly part of the Tyler Hill pottery industry, identified to the south of Tyler Hill. The site comprised an area earthworks. Field investigations in 1963 found the earthworks to include a series of pits and uneven ground. Tile fragments were recovered as surface finds. The features have been interpreted as the possible site of St Augustine's Abbey's tilery, in production during the 13th-14th century and later used in the 17th century by Sir John Hales.

Full Description
In the area centred at TR 14416039 there are old pits and disturbed ground, with pieces of tiling visible here and there in mole casts etc. In the s. bank of the stream at TR14256406 (`A') there is a strong concentration of black earth, broken tiles and burnt flint. Mr. F. Jenkins considers this to be the site of a tilery of St. Augustine's Abbey in the 13th - 14th c., and a tilery belonging to Sir John Hales in the 17th c. (1)
