Full Description
Medieval tile and pottery kiln, part of the Tyler Hill pottery industry, was excavated to the southeast of the village of Tyler Hill in 1967. The site was first recorded in 1965 when pottery and tile was recovered following deep ploughing. The excavations found that much of the kiln had been robbed but its dimensions could be determined, its overall width was about 9 feet 2 inches and its length between 10-14 feet. It had a chamber split into two by a spine wall with a possible stoke pit on the north side. The structure was constructed of tile fragments set in clay. Tile and pottery wasters were recovered from the vicinity of the kiln. The excavator has suggested that production took place sometime between 1250-1350. The pottery was in a sandy, micaceous firing fabric, often with an olive green glaze. Forms included cooking pots, storage jars, jugs and pipkins. (1)
