Full Description
Two small Upchurch urns with iron nails were found near the Canterbury Road and the railway viaduct at Folkestone. Many potsherds and tile wasters, found nearby, are thought to indicate a brickyard, but they may be connected with the Roman building in Folly Fields [see TR 23 NW 6]. (1)
No further information was gained on these finds. The general area indicated (centred TR 227364) has been completely developed many years. (2)
A note from Thomas Wright was communicated to a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries on 4th December 1851. It said that various fragments of Roman pottery had been found in Folkestone, much of which represented the waste products from tile manufacture. It was suggested that a Roman brick-kiln may have existed in the area of the greatest concentration of these finds. (3)
