Monument record TR 23 NW 25 - Saxon burial, Cherry Garden Hill, Folkestone

Summary

An earthen jug, of the "early Saxon period", was found by Smith in the barrow to the west of Caesar's Camp, near Folkestone (beleived to be TR 23 NW 1). A fowl's spur and some bones of the foot were also found. In 1940 excavation work for a pillbox uncovered further eveidence of this secondary burial on the north-east edge of the bowl barrow at a depth of approximately 4' 5". The burial was approximately aligned nw-se. No human bones were recovered although seven teeth and some bones of ox, sheep and a small carnivore were found. Cherry Garden Hill is a Lower Chalk spur of the North Downs. OD 125-130m.
