Full Description
3m x 3m excavation by Smarden Local History Society on a circular patch of dark soil. 5 Iron Age bloomeries were discovered. The largest measured 1.25m in diameter, and contained 0.4m of iron slag and charcoal. 3 smaller bloomeries were situated in the NW edge of the first bloomery (presumable after the first was had gone out of use), with a fifth small bloomery located a little way to the west. A posthole was found to the east of the first bloomery. Late Iron Age pottery was found in the upper fills. (1)
