Full Description
The Margate Railway linking the Chatham line at Faversham with Ramsgate Harbour, a length of 27 miles. The railway was built by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway Company, but as a piecemeal, development. The line between Faversham and Whitstable was opened on the 1st August 1860, but the section to Herne Bay was not opened until 13th July 1861 due to protests by the South Eastern Railway Company over the safety of a bridge at Whitstable. The final section of the route to Ramsgate was opened on the 5th October 1863. (1)
