Monument record TR 23 NW 82 - Metropole hotel cliff railway
Summary
A cliff railway serving the Metropole Hotel. It was built sometime after 1898 and first appears on an Ordnance Survey Map dating to 1907 (1:2500). Although it appears on modern Ordnance Survey maps (1:2500, 2007), evidence suggests it has been closed and the tracks lifted or left derelict. It may have been replaced by a new lift. It was operated on the water-balance principle, where the weight of a full water tank beneath the descending car was used to draw up the ascending car whose water tank was empty. It was controlled using brakes.
