c. TR 223361. North Street, Folkestone. This area of Folkestone was severely damaged during the Second World War and many of the houses atthe south end of North Street no longer exist. A survey was undertaken by the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments at the Ministry ofworks to examine the surviving houses in North Street in case it was decided to demolish them. Nos 13-49 on the west side of North Street and nos 16-44 on the east side were found to be of 17th century date with one room on each floor- ground, first floor and attic and the basement entrance outside the house. In general, the front walling was of Kentish ragstone rubble of well coursed large blocks, some with red brick quoins. Many of thefronts of the houses had three course brick bonds between the ground and first floors and these dated the houses to the late 17th century. No original doorways or main doors were left and only one pair of plank partitions in nos 26 and 28. There is no definite evidence of through passages from front to back doors as found in houses of early 17th century date. (The buildings on the westside of North Street have been demolished and it is not possible to equate all of the quoted numbers on the east side with those shown on OS 1:1250, 1975) (1)
