Monument record TR 24 NE 7 - Site of a Bronze Age round Barrow, near Haynes Farm, Eythorne

Summary

A round barrow site was previously thought to exist near Haynes Farm in the parish of Eythorne. After the identification of a slight mound in 1978, the site was excavated by the Dover Archaeology Group in 1982. The work confirmed it was a round barrow surrounded by two ditches that had been much damaged by ploughing. The upper fill of the inner ditch had been cut by a grave containing an unaccompanied crouched inhumation. It was situated on a ridge of chalk downland, some 39m to the north-east of Long Lane, which runs between Waldershore Park and Golgotha.

Full Description

Large round barrow near Eythorne Court, Eythorne. (1,2) No barrow could be found at Eythorne Court and the present owner has not heard of one. (3) TR 27164869. In 1978 a slight mound was noticed in a ploughed field to the north of Haynes Farm in the parish of Eythorne. The mound appeared to represent the last remnants of a largely destroyed round barrow, which did not appear to have been previously recorded. It was situated on a ridge of chalk downland, some 39m to the north-east of Long Lane, which runs between Waldershore Park and Golgotha. In 1982 a limited programme of excavation was undertaken by the Dover Archaeological Group. This work confirmed it was a round barrow. The work revealed that the undisturbed core of the mound still survived below the plough-soil and that it was surrounded by a double ditch. The upper fill of the inner ditch had been cut by a grave containing an unaccompanied crouched inhumation. (By researching his sources the author was able to prove that this is the mound recorded on the OS card and which can now be precisely located). (4) (A brief record of the work in progress). (5)
