Full Description
An air-photo reproduced by Crawford shows a double-box enclosure parallel to, and within a few feet of, the north-east ditch of the Canterbury-Dover Roman road at TR 2189 4995 (see AO/LP/63/65). This was probably an enclosed Roman barrow cemetery, at Stukeley's journey from Canterbury to Dover can be followed past "a group of Celtic barrows" (TR 25 SW 14), "a small camp of Ceasar's" (TR 25 SW 12) and "a single barrow whereon stood the mill" (TR 25 SW 7) until he describes what is undoubtedly the AP site, as follows- "... (the Roman road) ascends the hill to a hedge corner where there are three barrows, a great one between two little ones, all enclosed with a double square entrenchment of no great bulk; I fancy them Roman because parallel to, and close by, the Roman road; the great barrow has a cavity in the top and an entrance eastward; whether casually, or with design, I know not". He adds that "some of the barrows" were opened by Faussett, who had found valuable relics "some of which were of pure gold" but is not certainly referring to this particular group. The site is now under cultivation and no trace of enclosure or barrows survives. The farmer knows of no finds from the area. (1) TR 21894995. Cropmark of rectangular double ditched enclosure with `circular' porch mark of ? Building foundation in the centre. A trackway cuts across the corner of the ditches but kinks round the central feature. (2) This area has been entirely destroyed by the cutting for the modern dual carriageway. (3)
Description from record TR 24 NW 73:
TR21764970 Roman temple. (4)
From the cropmarks it is clear there is a double ditched feature possible building complex with internal features indicating a Roman temple, this site is north of a known Roman barrow cemetery. (MON5767) (5-7)
The GIS depiction of the barrow and temple complex originated from background material from an evaluation at a nearby site carried out in 1999. (8)
