Full Description

Further casual field-walking conducted by members of the Dover Archaeological Group on the south-east facing hill-slope below Eastry parish church (Britannia vol. 40, 278) revealed more Roman pottery and roof-tile fragments. Pottery recently recovered includes samian and a sherd of imported fourth century Mayen ware. Tile fragments include imbrex, tegula and two small pieces of box flue. No obvious concentrations of material have yet been identified but a building clearly exists somewhere in the immediate area. (1)

The pottery includes sherds from Oxfordshire ware (Young's Type C51 - AD 240-400+), Samian and Late Roman grog-tempered ware. There are also some flint-tempered Iron Age sherds and struck flints.
