Full Description
A surface collection of worked flints and implements was found during and after mechanical stripping of the A2 widening roadworks in 1971. The small collection is unworn, the forms and the patination suggest a Neolithic - Bronze Age date. One piece of pottery could be assigned to this phase due to the wear. The flint assemblage included at least one adze, alongside several scrapers. All of the artefacts were created from white or pale blue patinated flint. One pottery bowl was recovered from the site and was also interpreted as Neolithic-Bronze Age in date due to the coarseness and degree of wear. The description from the report reads "Bowl in soft black flint-tempered ware. Interior dirty dark grey-brown; exterior dirty brown-red,the oxidization process extending 3-4 mm. into the core. The clay is finely micaceous and relatively free of natural inclusions. The temper is predominantly coarse with little grit below 1 mm. and, mostly averaging 4-5 mm., appears dominant through the worn surfaces. Burnt out grass impressions near rim. Rim and interior smoother than outside" (from the original report, 2). The site was later occupied during the Iron Age (TR 24 NW 69). (1-3)
