Full Description

TR 29534335. A quantity of struck flints were recovered by Mr. Eric Young from his back garden at 22 Beresford Road over many years. Some of the flints were taken to Maidstone Museum in 1966, where they were identified as being of Mesolithic type. In March 1980 members of the Dover Archaeological Group , with the assistance of Mr. Young, excavated a single trial-trench in the back garden of No. 22 in an attempt to place the surface finds in some sort of archaeological context. The results of the excavation did nothing to prove the existence of a Mesolithic site here. However, a small collection of flints and fragments of Iron Age and Medieval pottery were excavated. The owner provided the Dover Archaeological Group with other finds which he had discovered during the course of his gardening. These included, 110 sherds of Medieval pottery, mostly of Sandy Tyler Hill ware, 51 sherds of Roman date and 52 sherds of coarse Iron Age pottery. There seems little doubt the material represents hill wash derived from higher up the valley side. A reappraisal of the material examined in 1966 indicates that there is nothing to suggest the site is Mesolithic. All the flints can be compared directly to the Neolithic - Bronze Age assemblages which are abundant on the downland around Dover. (1)
