Full Description

(TR) 273593. A Bronze Age hoard was found in 1983 not far from the surface, on arable land, near Overland, Ash-next-Sandwich during random amateur metal decting. Although subsquently dispersed among local residents, three have been traced which are typical palstaves, superficially corroded, but otherwise in good condition. (see illustration card) No 1 weighs 525gm. It is 17cm long. The flange width is 7.1cm. There are slightly raised borders along the flange, not present in theothers. The general shape is asymmetrical. In the possession of W Thomas. No 2 weighs 450gm. it is 17cm long The flange width is 7.1cm. There are slightly raised borders along the flange, not present in the others. The general shape is asymmetrical. in the possession of R Claringbould. No 3 weighs 410gm. It is 14.7cm long. Flange width is 5.5cm. The shaft-hollow on each side has three ill-defined longitudinal ridges. There is no trace of similar ridges on Nos 1 and 2. No 3 was given to the Royal Museum, Canterbury by T Hilden. The find site is 1km from the Hoaden hoard (see TR 25 NE 20) and 2.5kmfrom the Stourmouth hoard. It provides yet another example of the series of hoards along the shoreline of the Wantsum Channel.
