Full Description

TR 25295523. An Iron Age pottery vessel from Goodnestone, near Sandwich. In December 1970 a gas pipe-line cut through a small U shaped pit dug into the chalk, just north of the village of Goodnestone. The pit lay some 670m north of the parish church, about 40m north-west of a track known locally as Love Lane. The pit was about 0.50m wide and 0.40m deep and set within it were the remains of a large pottery jar, the base of which rested on the bottom of the pit in such a way as to suggest that the pit, itself only fractionally larger than the vessel, had been purposely dug to hold it. The vessel consists of a large, plain, hand-made, jar with a flat base and slightly out-turned, thickened rim, which when complete could have stood about 56cms high and had a diameter of 48cms. (See illustration card) It is heavily tempered with coarse flint grit. The precise date of the vessel is uncertain but it seems most likely to be Iron Age. No cremated bone was found. Large pots, set in the ground and used for storage are known in the Iron Age, but this pit does appear to be an isolated feature. The vessel is currently stored in Dover Town Museum. (1)
