Full Description
A Samian bowl and dish, both 2nd c. Lezoux ware, said to have been found together at Wingham (1). In B.M.., 1894,2-22,1 and 1894,3-9,18. Near the same spot at the same time was found an urn 3 feet high and a small black vase about 10 inches high containing dogs bones (2). [These are not at the B.M. and nothing is known of them]. (1)(2) TR 2457. A "beautiful" Samian bowl was displayed at the proceedings of the members of the British Archaeological Association at Sandwich Town Hall. (3) The bowl was made by the potter Paternus. The central figure of the design is a horseman in Cuirass brandishing his sword while the horse proceeds at full gallop. Surrounding the horseman are hounds, deer, horses, wild boar and strange indeterminate quadrapeds. Intermingled leaves suggest a forest background. This style is common at Lezoux on the bowls of Albucius and also further north. The bowl is now in the British Museum. (4)
