Full Description
Iron Age sites were located in 1960 along the course of a water-pipe trench from Stourmouth to Adisham (see map, sites 24-31) and sited to the general locality of Carpenter's Farm (TR 2488 5970). The trench here ran along the top of a flat ridge, mostly through orchards to Four Turnings (TR 2490 5904). Many small, poorly defined pits were revealed containing flints, some showing signs of working, fragments of pottery and, in the area of one pit, a saddle-quern rubbing stone. Some pottery can be dated by continental parallels to the 5th to 3rd centuries B.C. (The following sites were also recorded along the course of the pipe- line: TR 25 NW 49, 50,51, 52 and 53; TR 26 SE 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.) (1)
