Full Description

Struck flints and Iron Age pottery sherds were located along the course of a water pipe trench from Stourmouth to Adisham in 1960 (see map - sites 45-48) and are to be found in the area between Gobery Hill(TR 248 579) and Wingham River Marsh (TR 247 575). Near the top of the hill TR 249 578 there was a wide scatter of worked flints, cores, flakes and hammer pebbles, with numerous small, ill-defined pits, suggestive of a flint working site. The fabric of the Iron Age sherdsindicated a date in the earlier part of that period and probably represents occupation. One handle fragment of Medieval date was found where the trench entered the marsh and is an isolated find. (The following sites were also recorded along the course of the pipe- line: TR 25 NW 48, 49, 50, 51 and 53; TR 26 SE 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.)(1)
