Full Description
Iron Age and probable Neolithic pottery sherds, struck flakes, a fragment of glass and pit bones were uncovered along the course of a water pipe trench from Stourmouth to Adisham in 1960, between Wingham and Neavy Down (see map - sites 49-60). At TR 244 564 in spoil from the trench, fragments of a beaker were found, dated tentatively to circa 1900 to 1800 B.C. It is deduced that at this point the trench cut through the remains of a ploughed out barrow. (The following sites were also recorded along the course of the pipe- line: TR 25 NW 48, 49, 50, 51 and 52; TR 26 SE 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.)(1)
