TR231591 Two Roman watermills. (1)

"Part of one Romano-British settlement was excavated and recorded at Seaton between 1972 and 1974 prior to gravel extraction... The settlement straddled both sides of the main Roman road, and excavations revealed the course of an earlier watercourse and a number of channels cut to serve as headraces adjacent to which were situated a succession of watermills dating from the early third century through to the early fifth century. There is some evidence for earlier activity from the later first century and the distribution of features suggests the settlement extended northwards and eastwards. The principal activity carried out on the site appears to have been metalworking" (from the original report, 4).
