Full Description
(Area TR 286528) The remains of a manorial chapel, 38 ft by 19 ft with walls 2 ft thick, were discovered in 1784 in the south-east corner of Shingleton or Shrinkling Wood, which is in the south-west part of Eastry parish. It is mentioned in 1367, and was desolate many years before the Dissolution. (For Shrinkling or Shingleton Manor, see TR 25 SE 4) (1,2) There are no extant remains of this chapel and no evidence was uncovered to support a possible siting. (3-5)
In 2007 an earthwork survey was undertaken. Documentary evidence was also researched, detailing the history of the chapel. A rectangular building was identified in an enclosure 40m x 30m. The building itself was c.6m x 11m orientated east-west. Rubble from the site included dressed flints and ceramic building material. Mortar found on the site was thought to possibly be of 12th or 13th century date. (6)
