Summary

A Roman well was recorded at Venson Farm in 1974 when heavy rain caused subsidence in a field. The well contained late 1st to early 2nd century pottery and an iron key.

Full Description

TR 29955288 (1) A flint lined well was uncovered at Venson Farm, Eastry, after the farmer, Mr. Gambrill, reported a subsidence in a field after heavy rain in 1974 (1,2). The shaft had been cut through brickearth into chalk at a depth of 2.5 metres. The filling produced late first to early second-century sherds and an iron key. No surfaceindications of settlement were found in this or adjacent fields. Recorded by Dover Archaeological Group directed by J. Gaunt. Information from K. Parfitt. (1-2)

TR 29955288. A Roman shaft, a Venson Farm (TR29955288) A shaft collapsed in a field after heavy rain in 1974; it had been cut through brickearth into chalk at a depth of 2.5m. The filling produced late first to early second century sherds and an iron key. No surface indications of settlement were found in this or adjacent fields. (1-2)
