[TR 2078 5149] Ancient Earthwork [NAT] (1) Near the 5th milestone on the Canterbury-Dover road, a lynchet [see TR25 SW 11] is crossed by two later ditches of doubtful age. [It should be noted that the lynchet is older than the nearby AS barrows]. The ground between them and to the N is covered by pre-Roman potsherds (some in Maidstone Museum). (2) This feature, situated on the crest of Barham Downs ridge, has been reduced by the plough to a slight platform with traces of a ditchon all sides but the NE. There is no question but that it overlies theancient trackway along the ridge but its exact date and form or purpose are undetermined. The sherds found by Crawford are in Maidstone Museum store classified EIA but could not be traced for inspection. Some further IA sherds, including one of haematite coated ware with a black chevron (a) were found hereabouts by Dr Mary Watson,these remaining in her possession. Nothing was found at time of visit.Published 25 inch correct. The work shows extremely well on RAF AP's 106G/UK/1131/3123-5. (3) Additional bibliography. (4-6)
