[Area TQ 580 633] A rectangular earthwork containing a smaller entrenchment, surrounds Kingsdown Church on land occupied by fruit growers. (1) A search of the woods around the church, restricted by heavy undergrowth revealed only several stretches of typical woodland or old field boundary banks of earth and flints, sometimes with a ditch to one side. (2) TQ 579633. In Church Wood there is a complex pattern of earthworks surrounding the church of St Edmund which appears to be all that remains of a small medieval manor, possibly North Court, and its associated fields (see plan). An instrumental survey of the whole wood was made in 1972 revealing various enclosures and the possible remains of some buildings and a disused well. (3)
