Summary

A study of deserted medieval villages in 1971 found there to be 69 such sites in Kent including Shuart near St. Nicholas at Wade. For most of these sites the remains of a deserted or isolated church was seen as evidence of a deserted medieval village. It is thought that there was little to actually prove that there was a village at the sites in question.

Full Description

TR 270678. Site of deserted medieval village at Stuart. (1) Maurice Beresford and John G. Hurst eds. Deserted Medieval Villages, 1971, list 69 places for Kent in their County Gazetteers of Deserted Medieval Villages. In most cases there is nothing to prove that therewas a village at the sites in question. A deserted church site or isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted villages.
