Monument record TR 26 NE 138 - Possible Roman building, Shuart Farm, St. Nicholas at Wade

Summary

The possible remains of Roman building were found during trenching as part of an agricultural demonstration in 1982. A floor of rammed chalk and the vestige of a flint wall were exposed. Half of a small millstone in Bethersden marble was also discovered. The pottery fragments recovered from the site were of late 1st-2nd century fabrics. It is thought that during the Roman period this site may have been close to the shore of a small natural harbour.
