Full Description

[TR 252 607] Eleven pits were discovered in the main arable field of Shotfield Farm during the course of laying a water-main from Stourmouth to Adisham in 1960. These varied from mere soil discolourations to a large well defined pit. This contained fragments of animal bone, flints and a spindle whorl. The main part of the pit was filled with layers of ash, darkened soil, brickearth, sand and clay and contained many pottery fragments, broken flints and bone fragments. Numerous finds of pottery in the pits have produced evidence for an Iron Age occupation site or sites. (The following sites were also recorded along the course of the water-main; TR 25 NW 48, 49, 50, 51, 52 and 53; TR 26 SE 15, 16, 17 and 19.) (1)
