Monument record TR 26 SW 7 - Site of Early Medieval barrow, Stodmarsh, Wickhambreaux

Summary

Possible Saxon barrow situated near Stodmarsh Court. The barrow was opened in 1847 revealing brooches, buckles, shield and spearhead. No inhumation was recorded. Re-opened in 1854 when two other barrows were opened, but no other finds were discovered. In 1907, a sword with wooden scabbard, and an iron shield boss were found. No human remains were recorded. The area indicated is now covered with old, grassed over, gravel workings.

Full Description

[TR 214602] About 1847, a labourer removed a tumulus on the south side of the road, on the brow of the hill facing Stodmarsh Court. [TR 215605] Fibulae, buckles, etc., of Anglo-Saxon date, were found, but there is no trace of a shield umbo, spearheads and bronze bowls supposed to have been found. No human remains were found. (1) No further information on this barrow was gained. The area indicated is covered with old, grassed over, gravel workings. (2-3)
