Full Description
TR 21676493. A building suggestive of a small Roman furnace and chalk foundations were located during deep ploughing in Mile's field. The building consisted of a "room" measuring 45 ins by 45 ins internally, with a "corridor" on two adjacent sides. There was evidence of a vertical flue in the outer wall, and possibly a collapsed stoke-hole. The construction was a mixture of flint, sandstone, and septaria, with a few chalk blocks, as well as many pieces of re-used Roman roof and flue tiles and some Opus Signinum. About 36 ft east of the building were the foundations of chalk, 72 ft long and nearly 3 ft wide, with a limb 9 ft long at right-angles. Pits containing animal bones, pottery including Samian, lava quern material and nails were found. The two structures which have similar orientation may be associated with a larger complex as yet undefined and it may be of significance that the Hoath/Chislet parish boundary has a dog-leg bend within 200 ft of the building.
