Full Description

A crouched skeleton was found at a depth of 4ft. 1 inch in the chalk in an excavation some 3ft. 6 inches long, not far east of the two tumuli in Ringwould excavated in 1872 [see TR 34 NE 12]. The skull was submitted in September 1945 by W. P. D. Stebbing to Professor Cave who pronounced it to be possibly Pagan Saxon. There was no accompanying archaeological evidence. (1) No further information could be gained as to the siting or circumstances of this find. (2) [TR 364 470] "Inhumation burial, secondary in a barrow." Freedown, Ringwould. A human skull and part of a pelvis were found 4ft. deep, not far east of the two Bronze Age tumuli explored in 1872 (see TR 34 NE 12). The skeleton was said to have been found "with its knees up" but it is not known if it was on its right or left side. The skull is of a middle- aged man and there is "tentative reference at the latest of this speciment to the Pagan Saxon period". (3-4)
