Full Description
TR 36474921. Four post Iron Age structure and a gully. In the winter of 1980/81 the Dover Archaeological Group undertook a watching brief along the line of a new water main being laid by the Southern Water Authority between Oxney Bottom (TR 35704706) and Walmer, Deal. The features were discovered in a four to five metre wide strip which had been cleared of top soil ahead of pipe trenching (see illustration card no 1). A group of four post holes, forming a rectangle, measuring 2.80m (NW-SE) by 2.11m (NE-SW) was located during a weekend survey of the route (see illustration card). All the post holes were of a similar size averaging 0.23m in diameter and 0.36m deep with vertical sides and a flat base. Two pieces of iron pottery were found dating the post-holes to the Iron Age. The post holes are interpreted as the remains of raised stores or granaries. A gully of uncertain date was found 15m to the south west (see illustration card). The finds are in Dover Town Museum. (1)
