Full Description

TR 36474935. An Anglo-Saxon burial was revealed during the course of work on a pipe-line from Oxney Bottom to Deal a local resident reported that a number of years ago, whilst constructing a pit for a petrol tank in the forecourt of the Mill Service Station, a skeleton, with the remains of an iron spear and shield, was discovered. This was apparently salvaged and recorded by a local archaeologist, but no report ever appears to have been published. At the time, the burial was believed to be of 'Saxon' date, which, if the description of the grave goods is accurate, still seems the most likely. Further enquiries indicate that the archaeologist responsible for the work was probably the late WPD Stebbing of Deal. The finds and notes to this discovery must now be presumed lost. The mill service station is located on the north-west side of the A258. The 1980 pipe-line ran on the opposite side of the road to the garage but no other burials were encountered, suggesting that the earlier discovery was an isolated example. (1)
