Full Description
[TR 31594601] A Roman sepulchral deposit was found in 1918 about 50 yds. east of the Dover-Richborough Roman road, and 200 yds. south of the Whitfield-West Langdon parish boundary, in the second field north of Pineham. The burial consisted of three pots, each inside the other, the innermost containing the bones of a human hand and a bronzeking ring. (See illus) A bronze bracelet was also found but its relation to the burial is not known. The key ring is in Dover Museum.Information from F.Knocker and A.C. and F.W. McTolridge. (1) The discovery was made by Mr. A.C. Mactoldridge of Pineham, who is nowaged and cannot offer further information concerning the circumstance of discovery or exact findspot. His daughter stated that all the finds were sent to Dover Museum. The bronze key ring, dated to the 3rd century A.D. is on display, accession number, DA/1 1236. The pottery etc. was probably lost when the museum was partly destroyed in the last war. (2-3)
