Full Description
Probable ring ditch (concentric?) with linear features to north west: the linear features were not all plotted, being faint and a little suspicious. They extended 'under' the railway as far as TR 34084693. (1)
Cropmarks of a mult-ditched rectangular enclosure and a ring ditch and other linear features, east of Martin, visible on the 2007 Google Earth image. Outer rectangular enclosure measures 165m x 95m, with internal divisions. A rectangular enclosure immediately adjacent to the west measures 75m x 55m, with a pit feature, 4m in diameter in the north-west corner. A double ditched enclosure to the north measures 62m x 60m+, possibly extendin north under the road. A double ditched ring ditch immediately adjacent to the east of the main enclosure measures 27m (outer) and 8m (inner) in diameter with a central pit feature.
Possibly a Roman enclosure with surrounding field systems.
The Ordnance Survey drawings of 1797 show a series of rectilinear fields with trackways in the area. Some of the cropmarks probably correspond to these features.
