Monument record TQ 56 SW 16 - Late Iron Age/early Roman enclosure, Lullingstone Park

Summary

Late Iron Age and Roman settlement revealed in 1947 in Lullingstone Park by pottery scatters in ploughed field. Excavated in 1964-5, revealing a ditched enclosure, approximately 60 by 67 feet, associated with stratified pottery of the first century. Enclosures, pits and fragmentary enclosures are visible on air photographs of the mid 1970s, although their antiquity or association with the excavated site is unclear.

Full Description

[TQ 52416406] Long 0 deg 11 ' 21", Lat. 51 deg 21' 17" - pottery fragments, piece of tile (Roman?) and flint flakes were found by Greenfield and others Aug-Sept. 1947. Belgic and Roman pottery fragemts were found by 'Wright' in a newly ploughed area to south east of the above site and reported by 'Dicker' 15.5.48. (1)

Col. Meates in collaboration with G.K. Horner has uncovered part of a small, apparently rectangular, ditched enclosure at TQ 52416399: early 1st c. potsherds were found in the primary silting of the ditch which appears to have been deliberately filled - probably soon after that date. Col. Meates considers the site represents part of the pre-villa complex (see TQ 56 NW 7) - excavation is to be continued. No further information was gained on the items noted by Greenfield. (2)

1st century farmstead (5)

1st century pottery was found on a field surface, near Summer House Knoll, Lullingstone Park, some years ago. Excavation in 1964 (3) and 1965 (4) by the Crayford Manor House Archaeological Research Group revealed a Romano-British near rectangular, ditched enclosure, approximately 60 ft by 67 ft, containing a number of post-holes, (3) (4) some relatively modern, perhaps remains of a deer fence. (5) Pottery from the ditches suggests that they were filled between AD 60-100. (3) (4) One side is prolonged beyond the enclosure for not less than 75 ft. An earlier ditch, cut into by the enclosure and a pit were found. Aerial photographs were thought to show a linear ditch running for at least half a mile through the park. This has now been disproved, the indication on the photograph being due to a partially buried negative lynchet. (3-5)

TQ 52406400, Eynsford, Sevenoaks. Enclosure or linear feature in the form of a soilmark or an earthwork. Fragmentary linear featues on golf course in Lullingstone Park: they comprise 1-3 enclosures with pits amongst them. (6-8)
