Full Description
(TQ 52326348) Shoreham Castle Farm (NAT) (TQ 52516351) Castle (NR) (Remains of) (1) Shoreham Castle, formerly called Lullingstone, was a manor in the E.14th c., (a) and it is so described until 1715. It was in ruins in Leland's time (b), and the only surviving remains are two massive fragments of flint walling immediately E. of the present farmhouse. Traces of a moat are mentioned by M.H.L.G. (c) but no evidence of this could be found. The present farmhouse built out of the ruins (b) is an irregular-shaped timber-framed structure, much altered in the 18th and 19th c. and of little architectural interest. (2) See GP/AO/64/126/1-2. 5280 SHOREHAM CASTLE FARM ROAD Castle Farmhouse TQ 56 SW 38/1150 10.9.54. II GV 2. House of 3 builds, with no great length of time between them. Left gabled section C16, right gabled section circa 1600 and link between possibly C17. 2 storeys and attic, 5 windows, irregular. Fairly high pitched tiled roofs with small dormers. Right gabled section, of better quality than the rest, oversailing on 1st floor with exposed framing, plaster filling and moulded soffit. Rest of 1st floor tile hung. Ground floor plastered and painted to imitate vertical timbering. Some exposed timber inside. Queen post roof trusses and wind braces to purlins. Various C19 casements and sash windows; and late C18 panelled door with bracketed hood over. (3) Shoreham Castle. The farmhouse displays to the east a twice-projecting gable-end with closely set uprights. Its south wall is built into a chunk of flint walling 6 ft thick which narrows and curves round to the east.
