Full Description

Three A/S shield bosses and a heavily-corroded iron knife on display in Dover Museum, (acc. nos. [DA/1] 1222-3) and an A/S iron spearhead and fragments of a brooch, in store (acc. nos. [DA/1] 1218, 1235) all from St. Margarets-at-Cliffe, were presented by Miss N. C. Kearon, Graciosa, St. Margarets-at-Cliffe. (b) Miss Kearon left this address sometime between 1939 and 1950 and cannot be traced. The museum can offer no further information concerning the actual findspot, date or circomstances of dicovery. (1) (TR 360443) Anglo Saxon finds from St Margaret's at Cliffe ?Inhumation burial before 1960. An iron knife and three shield-bosses from St. Margaret's at Cliffe are in Dover Museum. They were not brought to the museum until long after the accidental discovery and nothing more is known about them. (2)


The correct Grid Reference for this item should be 636585 144746 centred. A newspaper cutting 10/8/1934 gives details. It is headed " Where the ninth wave breaks" . Other cuttings kept by the same scrapbook owner seem to be from all local papers. Many except this cutting are duplicated it may be a report on the Dover Museum Committee and the most likely publisher must be The Dover Express. Miss Kearon's builder found these items when constructing properties for her in The Droveway which she had built to let.
