Full Description

Roman cremation burials found at Buckland near Dover in 1859 during brickearth digging lay in an almost continuous line parallel to the Dover-Canterbury Road. More were found when the railway was constructed in 1859 and "scores, if not hundreds, of burials" were destroyed. Payne (d) lists the pottery then (1887) in Dover Museum, from this site. It cannot now be identified and some or all of it may have been destroyed when the museum was damaged in the last war. Five bronze armlets on display, "from Buckland", three of them found in a Roman urn, may come from this site. No brickearth working is shown in this area on the O.S. 6" 1st edition 1872 and no further information has been gained concerning the actual findspot, but a small depression in the valley bottom, completely built over in the 19th century and indicated on the O.S. 6" 1961 by the 50 foot contour,at TR 30764250, can be explained only by old workings, perhaps for brickearth. It lies between road and railway and may be the site of the cemetery. (1)

Suggest the site may be at TR 3015 4305 because: the geology here would be more suitable for brickearth extraction; it is north of the river, thus near to the conjectured route of the Roman road; the Dover-Canterbury road at this point is straight thus allowing a comparison of the cremations being in a line parallel to it more sensible.
