Full Description
A Bronze Age gold flange twisted spiral torc, armlet, now in the British Museum was found at Mr. Chignells residence, in 1878 in the grounds of Castle Mount, Dover. It weights about 340g, forms an armlet of five coils and is in perfect preservation. The twisted bar of gold is coiled into a spiral. The torc was made from a cast bar. Four longitudinal cuts were made into the bar which was worked to create an X-shaped cross section. The torc was then twisted by rotating the ends of the bar from left to right and coiled around four times. It was then forged at each end into large bent-back trumpet terminals which are circular in section. An electrotype of this armlet is displayed in Dover Museum. No closer identification of the find-spot could be obtained than the area of the grounds which formed 'Castle Mount', centred at TR 32144204. (1) A replica of the Torc is located in Dover Museum. (2)
