Full Description
TQ 519638. A Romano British cremation was found 64.0m from the north edge of the field and 1.94m from the east hedge, on a strip of plough bank, not far from Lullingstone Roman Villa (TQ 56 NW 7). The cremation burial had been placed in a shallow hole in the chalk and consisted of three largely incomplete pots, which were discovered after a badger extended its set and expelled one of the pots which was subsequently discovered. Minor excavation of the, by then, disused tunnel recovered the other two vessels in September 1983. It appears that the burial probably dates from about AD 150-200 and was either an isolated burial or was associated with other nearby burials beyond the limits of excavation. The first pot was of brown sandy ware and decorated with an open lattice pattern. It probably dated to the mid second to early third century. Pot No. 2 was of Samian ware, type Dv 31 and stamp MARCELLINII. A date of c. AD 160-200 is likely. The third vessel is a narrow neck globular flask with two cordons on neck and an outcurved slightly rolled rim of sandyware. It probably dates to AD 150-200. (1)
