Full Description

(summarised from source) A hoard of 685 silver coins of the late 13th century and a copper disc of penny size, were found in a lead casket on the 3rd of June 1955 by workmen laying a new gas main, 2-3ft below ground level, in Market Street, Dover, at TR 31874143(d). The depth at which it was located is consistent with it having been concealed beneath a Medieval floor but unfortunately the site was not amenable to a full archaeological investigation. The hoard consists of 41 groats, 14 1/3rd Groats, 626 Pence, 2 Half Pence, and three farthings. The peculiar importance of the hoard lies in the fact that the English groats are both of Edward I. Hitherto no English find has been recorded which contained Edward I groats, and it has even been suggested that the coins were never current, although quite rightly the suggestion has not found favour with numismatists. The British Museum holds 82 coins, 3 are in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and 600 together with the disc and casket are on display at Dover Museum. (3)
