Full Description

A number of Roman finds were made during building work undertaken in March 1929 to the rear of no. 183 Snargate Street (TR 31944124), Dover. The finds were situated within a layer of Roman sand which was found beneath later made ground and which extended to a depth of approximately 1m. The finds included: several bits of tufa, one of which had Roman mortar, a Roman roofing tile and some chalk and stone rubble. These finds indicate an extension south-westwards of the known occupation area already proven by previous finds in the Market Square area of the town, to be covered by sand over Roman strata. Being well above sea level, it is probably blown sand from the great bar that formerly blocked the haven. (Information from E G J Amos: 1929). (1)
