Full Description
A Roman coin was found by Mrs O'Hare whilst digging in her garden at 157 Clarendon Street (TQ 31004110, OS 1:2500 1958) in Dover. It is a bronze coin of valens 'AD 364-378', younger brother of Valentirian I. (See illustration card). The obverse displays bust facing right, diademed, drapped and cuirassed. The legend reads D.N. Valens P.F. Aug. The reverse displays a standing figure holding a standard and although not quite clear, victory on orb. The legend may read Gloria Romanorum around edge with the mintmark SMAQP, being in all probility Aquileia, below. Whilst the coin appears to be a stray it is worth noting that the Roman aqueduct serving the forts must have passed close to the area where the coin was found. The coin is owned by Mrs O'Hare. (1)
