Full Description
At Dover a grave-slab was found with runes seeming to read "Gislheard". It may be attributable to a bishop of Selsey named Gislhere dating about 775 to 784. However the Dover slab is a development of the Fan-shape arm probably of tenth century date and its dedication is therefore uncertain. There is a possibility that the fan-shaped arms developed earlier. (1) It is probably a coffin lid and was found before 1832 during alterations to the Antwerp Inn on the north side of Market Place, under the foundations of the former church of St. Peter. It is approximately 1.8m long, 0.65m wide at the top and 0.5m wide at the bottom. (2)
